All PR emergency equipment should be specific to each service and must be supported by a risk assessment which has been discussed and agreed with each organisation’s resuscitation team and is relevant to the site that PR is provided in, eg acute hospital, private gym, church hall or others. This will include specifics around emergency oxygen equipment and defibrillators.
PR service provided within acute hospitals will have access to a resus trolley and relevant equipment, however this will not be replicated when PR is provided in other sites such as, private gyms or church halls. In these sites, the type of emergency equipment available, ie oxygen equipment and defibrillators, will be specific to the host organisation.
Oxygen equipment for emergency situations in PR is different to the oxygen equipment supplied for patients who are on long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) or need an ambulatory supply. Patients who require emergency oxygen should follow emergency oxygen guidelines and have access to devices that will provide 15 l/min of oxygen and non-re-breathe masks required in resuscitation situations.
PR services are not required to provide emergency oxygen equipment, and can provide oxygen equipment that will only be required for LTOT and ambulatory needs.
